Meaning & source

Luqman was given wisdom by Allah — and a surah bears his name for the counsel he gave his son: do not associate anything with Allah… be grateful… enjoin what is right, bear patiently what befalls you, and do not turn your cheek from people in pride (31:13–19).

Whether he was a prophet is discussed among the scholars; his wisdom is not in dispute.

Given wisdom

Allah granted Luqman hikmah — wisdom as a gift: "and We certainly gave Luqman wisdom: be grateful to Allah" (Surah Luqman, 31:12) — and then, chose to relate some of that wisdom to us directly. An entire surah carries his name, and what it preserves is not his biography but the counsel Allah chose to make permanent.

Wisdom's first word is gratitude

The very first thing Allah tells us about the wisdom given to Luqman is what it produces: "whoever is grateful is grateful for his own benefit, and whoever is ungrateful — indeed, Allah is Self-Sufficient and Praiseworthy" (Surah Luqman, 31:12). Wisdom, in this framing, is measured by whether it makes a person thankful.

A father's counsel to his son

What Allah preserves of Luqman is addressed to his son, and it forms one of the Qur'an's most complete summaries of moral and spiritual education, verse by verse:

  1. Reject shirk first. "O my son, do not associate anything with Allah; indeed, associating partners with Him is a tremendous injustice" (Surah Luqman, 31:13) — tawhid comes before every other lesson.
  2. Honor your parents. Allah's own voice joins in here — "We have enjoined upon man goodness toward his parents" (Surah Luqman, 31:14) — though obedience to Allah takes precedence if a parent calls toward disbelief (Surah Luqman, 31:15).
  3. Know that nothing escapes Allah. "Even if it is the weight of a mustard seed... Allah will bring it forth" (Surah Luqman, 31:16) — a reminder that every deed, however small, is seen.
  4. Establish prayer. "O my son, establish prayer" (Surah Luqman, 31:17) — the foundation of a disciplined faith.
  5. Enjoin good and forbid wrong. (Surah Luqman, 31:17) — moral responsibility within a society does not end with one's own conduct.
  6. Be patient with whatever befalls you. (Surah Luqman, 31:17) — patience as the companion of moral courage.
  7. Do not turn your cheek away from people in arrogance. (Surah Luqman, 31:18) — humility toward others, not just toward Allah.
  8. Walk with moderation. "Be moderate in your pace" (Surah Luqman, 31:19) — a pace that reflects a settled heart, neither showing off nor showing indifference..
  9. Speak gently. "Indeed, the harshest of sounds is the braying of donkeys" (Surah Luqman, 31:19) — a vivid image that teaches restraint, courtesy, and measured speech.

Nine lessons, moving in order from the largest truth (Allah alone) to the smallest daily habit (the tone of your voice) — a complete curriculum, delivered with the tenderness of "O my son" running through every line.

To carry this name

To carry this name is to hold wisdom the way Luqman did: beginning with gratitude, anchored in tawhid, and expressed in the smallest details of daily conduct — a lowered voice, a level pace, a patient heart.

Scholars discuss

Was Luqman a prophet? The Qur'an itself never calls him nabi or rasul, and the majority of classical scholars — including Ibn Kathir, al-Tabari, and al-Qurtubi — held that he was not a prophet, but a righteous man given extraordinary wisdom as a gift. A minority held the opposing view, reasoning that his prominence in the Qur'an might imply prophethood. This site presents both positions without settling between them, consistent with how genuine scholarly disagreement is handled throughout this collection.

In the hadith

There is no authentic hadith that gives a detailed biography of Luqman. Some later narrations attribute additional sayings to him, but their chains are generally weak or uncertain, and this site does not rely on them to establish historical fact.
